Other Worlds

Two souls

Two souls meet in a place where time does not exist

Some call it heaven, some call it bliss

The before and after place if from looking here on Earth

The place that we've forgotten, our home before birth

In a place where all is love, their love grew stronger still

In eternity they always had and they always will

If you've ever heard laughing you've never heard so much

Than when walking together, when these two souls touch

As if eternal life could shine brighter than before

Not a thing in any world would make them love each other more

They said let's play a game, let's each have a birth

See if you can find me, I'll meet you down on Earth

We'll don the robes of life and relinquish all control

And if I see you there I'll recognize your soul

So off they went and came right back in the blinking of an eye

They both had gone and lived full lives but forgot the reason why

I was a lonely seed, I then grew into a tree

And every creature in that forest became a friend to me

And I was a little red bird in the balmy sky I flew

I sat on many trees but none of them were you

As if eternal life could shine brighter than before

Not a thing in any world could make them love each other more

They said let's play again, let's each have a birth

See if you can find me, I'll meet you down on Earth

We'll don the robes of life and relinquish all control

And if I see you there I'll recognize your soul

So off again they went and in the blinking of an eye

They both had gone and lived full lives but forgot the reason why

I was a homeless man, hungry, frail and week

I sat and watched as many a soul passed me on the street

And I was a sweet young girl with ribbons in my hair

I passed many beggars but never saw you there

On and on it went, lifetimes washed in sand

Needles in the haystack of a temporary land

They were lords and laborers, they were criminals and priests

They were tiny fragile ants and great big ugly beasts

There were times they held castles and times they had no friends

Each time forgetting who they were and where they'd been

Then one day a peasant boy walked into a shoe store

The girl behind the counter asked, "Have we met before?"

A long goodbye

You were the sheep in wolves' clothing

And as much as I tried baby I'm just no shepherd

The rock in my gut hasn't gotten any lighter

I've analyzed it to hell, weighed it and measured

You and me, you and me, you and me been nothing but a long goodbye

Most folks wear many faces

And I'm sick to my bones with love for one side

I've drowned all my doubts in a glass of half measures

But they're coming right back to eat my alive

You and me, you and me, you and me been nothing but a long goodbye

You promise me and I'll promise you

No tears this time

To have loved and have lost or never at all

I guess I haven't made up my mind

You and me, you and me, you and me been nothing but a long goodbye

Mary Anne

Just another makeshift mining town where life is traded for gold

Where hard men live hard lives and comfort is bought and sold

They got girls in the saloon, they'll take you by the hand

I never saw a prettier face than the angel Mary Anne

On a blackjack streak round midnight I looked up and saw her there

Threw my cards down on the table and took Mary Anne upstairs

Dark curls run down her soft cheek, her eyes an emerald green

Her kisses taste of whiskey, the prettiest girl I ever seen

I came with my brother to mine for gold but I never saw a sight

Mary Anne on the other hand I've been seeing every night

I told her that I loved her, she smiled from ear to ear

I asked her if she'd marry me, she said, "have another beer"

I walked in to greet the bar man on a quiet afternoon

I asked where was my sweetheart and he pointed to her room

As I turned to head for the stairs I heard the bar man's plea

"I wouldn't go up there son, you won't like what you see"

I felt the heat rise to my face I ran up and bust through the door

I put a bullet in that stranger's head and for her I had five more

Now I'm standing on the gallows, it will all be over soon

As I'm haunted by the picture when the smoke cleared from the room

Through tears I saw what I had done, that was no stranger

Mary Anne lying in her blood and my brother next to her

I'll be right here

I got nowhere to go

I've got no place to be

If there's something on your mind

Won't you sit right here with me

You've got that look about you

That could tear my heart in two

A smile for the ages

That's left me desperate for you

I ain't going anywhere

You know where I'll be found

I'll be right here

As long as you're around

Like a man lost at sea

To see that lighthouse up on high

That same light is shining

It's shining in your eyes

I ain't going anywhere

You know where I'll be found

I'll be right here

As long as you're around

Juan and hector

Their mother worked the cane fields, her three boys worked em too

The only meal for a long day's work ahead a wad of sugar cane to chew

Juan Pablo was the youngest, Grandma called him San Juan

Hector was the middle boy, the strong and silent one

The eldest boy Ernesto ran off to the city

They lost him to the world of gangs but Guatemala's no place for self pity

Hector clutched the crucifix madre gave him 'fore they'd gone

She held him close and told him, "you watch over your brother Juan"

Their cousin worked in California, sent back money to his wife

Juan and Hector were headed north for a chance at a better life

There's a better world a-coming, we'll make it there some day

In this life or the next, at least that's what they say

They'd been on the road for four days, beginning to lose all steam

Two dusty trucks and one scorching bus on the road to an American dream

Next stop California, they'd sure need a little luck

Hanging on a hundred miles to the under side of a truck

There's a better world a coming, we'll make it there some day

In this life or the next, at least that's what they say

It happened near the boarder, a big bump in the road

Where little Juan is buried, only Hector knows

But the weight of guilt and grief, he's carried every day since then

Hector knows he'll carry alone, he can never go home again

There's a better world a-coming, and the tears we cry today

Will all be dry sweet bye and bye, at least that's what they say

Keene valley sky

On Sunday morning's New York City dawn

If from your rooftop room you wake to see me gone

Upon horizons north please don't glare too long

I'll be wandering that Keene Valley Sky

When the lights and noise begin to take their toll

And in your eyes the screens start to burn a hole

When you can no longer hear the silence of your soul

I'll be wandering that Keene Valley Sky

When you've been carried away and lost in the crowd

At the altar of consumerism bow

When the machines of men have grown carelessly loud

I'll be wandering that Keene Valley Sky

When the money lenders come to take their due

And there's nothing left for the likes of me and you

Diamond stars still shine the whole night through

I'll be wandering that Keene Valley Sky

When you've grown tired of having to always prove your worth

With false appearances and sand castle works

And the constant need to earn your place on Earth

I'll be wandering that Keene Valley Sky

Entertain Us

Tell me again of your opinion

Tell me of yours so I can form mine

What do you think of this candidate

Don't tell me their policies don't waste my time

And what's going on with those rich pretty girls

You know the one's living in Hollywood

Are there pictures to see, are they ugly like me

Oh yeah that makes me feel good

Entertain us, entertain us, let us be entertained

We've worked hard all day let us shut down our brains

Tell us what to believe, tell us who's dating who

Entertain us just don't give us the news

I don't want to hear about the latest research

Or the plight of the migrant farm hand

Don't tell me about how the real system works

It's just too boring to stand

When asking your questions get the answers you want

Interruption is a great tool to use

The louder the argument the better it is

We want shouting and verbal abuse

Entertain us, entertain us, let us be entertained

We've worked hard all day let us shut down our brains

Tell us who to vote for and what products to use

Entertain us just don't give us the news

And tell me again who's the greatest nation

Made of only Democrats and Republicans

I don't care what's going on in the rest of the world

The only country that matters is the one I'm living in

Entertain us, entertain us, let us be entertained

We've worked hard all day let us shut down our brains

Tell us what to accept, tell us what to refuse

Entertain us just don't give us the news

Where no man's gone before

He had that Apollo 11 rocket in his hand

Running around the backyard as fast as he can

Mission control we are all systems go

Halfway up the old oak, a pile of leaves down below

Commander Stew was about to do what he's been planning to for months

"Stewart Andrew Clarke, you get down from there at once!"

"What do you think you're doing?" His mother yelled from the back door

Stew looked down and calmly said, "I'm going where no man's gone before"

I'm gonna ride this rocket to the stars

I'm gonna burn this thing until we see how far

I'm gonna sail that far and distant shore

I'm gonna ride this thing to where no man's gone before

He joined the Air Force young and quickly earned his stripes

But the stratosphere wasn't high enough for Stewart Clarke's sights

He got the call from NASA flying rockets into space

His first time in the pilot's seat the look on Stewart's face

If they could build it he could fly it and he'd land it safely too

When the time came to send a man to Mars the job was Commander Stew's

The first to set foot, his name etched in mankind's lore

Stewart Clarke could finally say, "I'm going where no man's gone before"

I'm gonna ride this rocket to the stars

I'm gonna burn this thing until we see how far

I'm gonna sail that far and distant shore

I'm gonna ride this thing to where no man's gone before

It took two years just to get there and then the time came

He landed softly on a dime just as he was trained

He opened up the hatch and set foot on Martian land

He looked around and down to find the footprints of a man

I'm gonna ride this rocket to the stars

I'm gonna burn this thing until we see how far

I'm gonna sail that far and distant shore

I'm gonna ride this thing to where no man's gone before

Other worlds

It seems like even the birds have become still

There are things a man can't understand and probably never will

The cast of his own shadow or the resonance of his song

Or the lives that he's touched on the path he's walked along

Life is lived from the inside out and from the outside in

It's hard to tell where the darkness ends and where the light begins

Guess you got stuck in the darkness, didn't know what else to do

As dawn breaks a new world awakens an emptier place without you

But there are other worlds

Macro cosmic wormholes through which each soul is hurled

Time is just an instant and space is only sound

Silence fills the space between the other worlds and now

I can still see your eyes speak what you wouldn't say

The weight of one man's world no one else can weigh

The burdens of the past and all of fortunes misgiving

The existential longing and the loneliness of living

It's too much sometimes I know, some of us were born alone

And no matter the people or the place we never felt at home

But you made it better and that's the hard and fast truth

And as dawn breaks a new world awakens and emptier place without you

But there are other worlds

Macro cosmic wormholes through which each soul is hurled

Time is just and instant and space is only sound

I'm so sorry John, I hope it's over now

Belief

I've heard plenty of prophecies I just don't believe in

But I do believe in angels and demons

This world can be callous, lonely and tragic

But I still believe in miracles and magic

I don't know if there's a god where they say he is up there

But I do believe in righteousness and prayer

I can't believe the things that Sunday salesman said

But I do believe in rising from the dead

If it's hope you're looking for or faith to see you through

I'm here now to tell you the miracle is you

The great and vast unknown I no longer need to fear

For I do believe eternity is right here

And if I had to choose between one and the other

You can keep the logic I'll take the wonder
